Developer vows to reuse historic Milwaukee Avenue facade in Logan Square TOD

Image
This week, workers were spotted demolishing the historic Weyland Building at 1968 N. Milwaukee Avenue , which naturally raised concerns among a number of Logan Square residents and preservationists who believed that the facade of the 1907 John Ahlschlager-designed structure was to be preserved and reused in a new development planned for the site. Despite being taken down, the old exterior will still be reincorporated into an eight-story, transit- oriented apartment development from Clayco. A push from preservationists to save the entire Weyland Building that collected nearly 600 signatures resulted in a compromise to leave its Milwaukee Avenue frontage in-place. However, after it was determined that the facade lacked structural integrity to stand on its own, the developer amended its agreement with the city to allow the brick and limestone exterior to be dismantled and put back at a later date. Flooding leaves Bridgeview apartment complex residents trapped

Image
click to enlarge Bridgeview Village apartment complex for several days. - DUSTIN WATERS" /> Dustin Waters Flooding closed off the main entrances to the Bridgeview Village apartment complex for several days. As days of heavy rain swelled the Cooper River, residents of the Bridgeview Village apartment complex were trapped. Even Monday evening, the community’s two main exits on North Romney Street remained impassable for most vehicles. With the help of police, residents of the 300-unit complex say they were able to move the dumpsters blocking a single-lane road that cuts through the woods surrounding the complex. Although it doesn’t have a name, that road now serves as the only way in or out of the neighborhood. But for the first few days, even it was too flooded to use. “They opened that up Sunday. So Friday, Saturday, Sunday — it was three days we were stuck here,” says Charles Smith, age 69, whose apartment looks out onto the knee-deep wat...

How a St. Paul basement, boxing space came back swinging

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - When a new owner bought an indistinct building off Front Avenue in St. Paul’s North End, he had no clue what was in the basement. It didn’t look like much: boxes, other clutter, a water hookup. He started a gym upstairs and thought nothing of it, the Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/2vxSjJm ) reported. But when it came to gyms, he was squatting on a big piece of history. Decades earlier, a small troop of boxers moved into the vacant space below. It didn’t look like much then, either. “It was all shut off and dark . a cluttered-up mess,” said Gary “Rice Street Skinny” Struss, the light heavyweight. The young men cleared out half of it - pushing all the junk to the rear. One, a plumber, installed a shower in the corner; another had relatives do a little ironwork. In time they had a pair of heavy bags, a speed bag and a small “ring,” about 10 feet by 10; a quarter of regulation size. Nothing more than two-by-fours with plywood on top. “That’s all we had. You know what ...
