Austin Auditor: Demolition process needs revamp

Image
AUSTIN - All across Austin, there are structures being torn down and replaced with new buildings. In the fiscal years 2015 and 2016 the city approved approximately 1 ,700 demolition permits, compared to about 600 in 2008. "My walk to work used to be just like little old buildings and now there's like, on Chicon, they're like building all those apartments and stuff," said Lindsay Scheckelhoff who moved to East Austin two years ago.  Her neighborhood is filled with homes being renovated or demolished and rebuilt. "It just kind of happens and you're like 'oh that was there yesterday and now it's gone,'" Scheckelhoff said.  Neighbors aren't the only ones who aren't in the loop about demolition projects. "It's up to the property owner to notify, whether it's Austin Energy or Austin Water that that demolition is going to happen," explained City Auditor Corrie Stokes . "And then also to call the city for an inspection ...

Another Turning Point For Mission Valley

Image
There was a time, and it wasn’t long ago, when Mission Valley was farmland. Black and white photos from the 1960s show rows of turnip plants and herds of grazing dairy cows owned by farmers. “I remember the stories of how they would take the cows under the freeway after they built Interstate 8, or 80 back in those days,” said Rob Hutsel, a fourth- generation San Diegan . “The deal with the landowner was he still had to get his cows to the river. And so they left a tunnel under it so they could take their cows down to the river to get their water... I always wonder whatever happened to the tunnel.” The completion of the I-8 freeway around 1960 was the beginning of the end of an era in valley. The Mission Valley mall was built, and the valley became a suburban shopping destination . Now, another shape shift is on the horizon. Hutsel is president of the San Diego River Park Foundation and a member of the city’s Mission Valley Planning Group . He sees opportunity in Mission Valley . “...

think rooftop vegie patches and beehives

The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). The occasional jazzy façade tries feebly to make up for otherwise cheap construction amid a chorus of greys. At ground level, carpark roller doors alternate with mean pocket garden...
