Danny Rolling lay on a gurney. A prison official asked Florida 's most notorious serial killer since Ted Bundy if he had a last statement. Rolling responded with a twangy hymn, apparently self-penned. "He who flung the stars into heavens above, created the oceans, mountains, eagles and doves," he sang. "None greater than thee, Oh Lord, none greater than thee." War hero claims Navy abandoned him, others cry murder

He’s been on the job only about a week but Richard V. Spencer, the new Secretary of the Navy, faces the tough job of determining the fate of an American war hero . Navy Lt. Craig R. Becker stands accused of pushing his drugged and sleeping wife out the seventh-floor window of their Belgian apartment building in late 2015, dashing out her life on the pavement of Mons, a sleepy city in the French-speaking portion of the northern European nation . Becker maintains his innocence, saying the death was a suicide. He accuses the Navy’s Sixth Fleet of abandoning him to Belgian authorities . Becker, once stationed in San Diego and still linked to Naval Special Warfare in Coronado, wants his prosecution transferred to the American military ’s court system — a right almost always afforded in such cases. But why “ripper”? A ripper is “a tool that is used to tear or break something,” and the victims were actually torn open. After Jack’s killings, however, “ripper” came to mean “a murderer who mutilates victims’ bodies.” You can thank the media for that. Just like “gate” is added to any political scandal, the press now calls any killer who is bloody enough a ripper. It makes for a great headline because of the fear the word “ripper” conjures in the public’s mind. If the victims are prostitutes, so much the better. Over the last 100 years, the press has invoked “ripper” numerous times. But many of these rippers killed more than Jack did—some a lot more.
