ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando tourist strip known most for attracting conventioneers and thrill-seeking visitors — International Drive — is getting another identity. In recent years, thousands of full-time residents have moved into apartments built on the southern end of the 11-mile corridor, which has been renowned for industry gatherings, shopping and attractions. Plans call for thousands more renters — and schools. "It's kind of the rebranding of I-Drive right now," said Luann Brooks, executive director of the I- Drive Business Improvement District . The realty group beat out more than 20 offers to secure the 294-unit complex on Hickory Creek Drive . A local buyer has picked up nearly 300 apartments in Henrico, where two other decades-old rental communities are under contract. McCann Realty Partners beat out nearly two dozen local and out-of-town offers on Hickory Creek, a 294-unit, 32-year-old complex of one- and two-bedroom apartments at 2344 Hickory Creek Drive . The Henrico-based firm, based less than a mile away, purchased the 20-acre property along Tuckernuck Drive, between West Broad Street and Mayland Drive, for $28.55 million. The sale closed June 27 , according to county records. McCann president Matt Akin and vice president Thomas Upson said the property’s proximity to their office, as well as to Innsbrook, was appealing to the firm, whose portfolio of rental properties is primarily out-of-state. But it's doubtful the sign refers to the nearly three-tenths of a mile of trees that have been cut down and shrubs that have been ripped up along St. Andrews Drive. The landscaping work has increased the visibility of the apartments. It also has raised the ire of Wilmington officials who have slapped the complex's owner with a $200 fine for each tree allegedly removed illegally . With 231 trees cut down, the fine totals $46,200. That's the largest penalty for illegal tree removal levied by the city that anyone interviewed can remember. "It certainly is a significant amount," said City Attorney Tom Pollard . Santa Maria murder suspect dead... Related Content SANTA MARIA, Calif. - An officer- involved shooting in Los Angeles County has left a murder suspect connected to an Amber Alert out of Santa Maria dead Tuesday night .  48-year-old Konstantin Morozov was taken to the hospital in critical condition but police confirmed he died from his injuries during a press briefing.
