But why “ripper”? A ripper is “a tool that is used to tear or break something,” and the victims were actually torn open. After Jack’s killings, however, “ripper” came to mean “a murderer who mutilates victims’ bodies.” You can thank the media for that. Just like “gate” is added to any political scandal, the press now calls any killer who is bloody enough a ripper. It makes for a great headline because of the fear the word “ripper” conjures in the public’s mind. If the victims are prostitutes, so much the better. Over the last 100 years, the press has invoked “ripper” numerous times. But many of these rippers killed more than Jack did—some a lot more. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A man died Sunday night in a shooting at an apartment complex on Hillcrest Road in Kansas City, Mo. Police said the man's family returned home to find him dead in an apparent homicide. Officers and emergency crews responded at 8:19 p.m. to Stonehaven Apartments on the 8300 block of Hillcrest Road in reference to a shooting. A caller, likely a member of the family, told police a man had been shot, possibly a few hours beforehand. Responding crews announced the man dead on arrival and began speaking to the man's family as the investigation began. Police described the victim as a male in his early 20s. There is no suspect in custody, and police said they have no description of a suspect. The shooting death happened across the street from where two teenagers and a baby were gunned down last month. Nearly all residents of the McPherson Park senior housing complex have returned to their residences after a kitchen fire broke out in an apartment Friday night , a Gloucester Housing Authority administrator said Monday. The building’s construction played a role in firefighters being able to confine the blaze to the single unit, said  Fire Chief Eric Smith and Alice Sheridan, assistant executive director of the  housing authority , which owns and manages the six-story building at 31 Prospect St. The man whose apartment was destroyed by the kitchen fire has been relocated to another apartment within the 97-unit building, Sheridan said.  Neither she nor Smith could provide information Monday on the status of a woman who was rescued by firefighters and taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital after she fell inside her fourth- floor apartment while trying to evacuate. An Oxford University employee has been charged with murder in Chicago after a 26-year-old hair stylist was found with more than 40 stab wounds. Somerville College's Andrew Warren, 56, is accused of killing Trenton Cornell -Duranleau. Professor Wyndham Lathem , 42, whose apartment the body was found in, is also accused. Chicago Police announced on Saturday that they had both been charged with first degree murder after they were returned to the city from California, where they handed themselves in following a nationwide manhunt. And he would have been wrong.  Gainesville police say a man about 5 feet, 9 inches tall approached the woman from behind as she walked Coco at Bivens Cove Apartments , at 3301 SW 13th St ., around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The robber struck her on the head with a glass bottle and demanded money.  Coco, a brown dog with graying fur on his muzzle and around his eyes, bit the robber’s leg, and the man fled into the nearby woods. Coco was rewarded with treats. “He had a bone; he had another bone,” said Blake Pfirrmann, 45, Coco’s owner and the woman’s caregiver of 21 years. Seventy years ago this month, my grandfather fled India to join millions of refugees in a new country to be known as Pakistan. A teenager was unable to save her 5-year-old sister from their burning apartment Tuesday night when roaring flames turned the apartment into an inferno, making it impossible to get to the second-floor where the child was watching television, officials said.
