Residents claim Pepper Tree Apartments evicting them after complaining about shooting

WHITEHAVEN, Tenn. -- Police said they are looking for whoever shot at a Memphis police squad car Tuesday morning in Whitehaven. No one was hurt, but you may recognize where this crime happened. Memphis Police has responded to dozens of calls at Pepper Tree Apartments over the years. The District Attorney almost declared it a public nuisance more than 5-years ago, but the complex owners promised to make changes. WREG went to Pepper Tree Tuesday afternoon and uncovered even more problems and residents who said they do not feel safe. "If you stay here, get the f*** away from here," tenant Whitney Carpenter said. Carpenter was furious because she said Pepper Tree Apartments told her she and her infant son have three days to get out. They told her she was loitering by standing outside her own apartment. However, her friend said wasn't the truth. "It all came from us talking to you," she told a News Channel 3 crew . Carpenter spoke briefly with WREG off camer...

John Hartness Brown complex on Euclid Avenue sells after years of litigation, vacancy (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - One of downtown Cleveland 's worst eyesores finally changed hands Monday , after years of court fights and false redevelopment starts . Alto Partners bought the long- vacant John Hartness Brown complex on Euclid Avenue for $9.1 million, in a deal that sprang from a messy foreclosure fight . The developer, a relative newcomer to the Cleveland real estate market , expects to fill the buildings with apartments, a hotel, retail and parking. Construction could start during the first few months of 2018. Stretching from 1001-1101 Euclid Ave., the John Hartness Brown complex spans three addresses and five facades on north side of the street. Thanks to troubled ownership, financial hurdles and lingering fallout from the Great Recession, the property has languished despite the surge in downtown living and the trend of turning historic buildings into housing and hotels. Alto will be the third developer in a decade to attempt a revival of the block. A rendering shows what ...
