Don't Have Enough Saved for Retirement? Consider Retiring Abroad | Markets-and-stocks

Most Americans are behind on their savings. The median amount the average American family has saved for retirement is just $5,000, according to a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute . Even among those nearing retirement age (age 56-61), the median amount saved is a mere $17,000. Also, while the cost of living in the U.S. varies depending on the area of the country, it's generally becoming more expensive to cover the basic necessities. Once you consider the costs of healthcare, long-term care, and other expenses you may incur during retirement, it may be more expensive than you think to retire comfortably. But who says you have to retire in the U.S.? With increasing healthcare costs , a shaky Social Security program , and rising home prices , it may be a good idea to pack your bags and consider moving abroad during retirement. Here are a few cities that may be a good choice for retirees looking for a more affordable lifestyle. Image source: Getty Images. 1. Kingston,...

Design a TV Room That Doesn't Look Like One Using These Tricks

Just because you enjoy are obsessed with Game of Thrones doesn't mean you want a big hunka plasma taking up the majority of your apartment's living room. Nor should you have to consume all your favorite obscure documentaries (and the, ahem, occasional Pixar flick) through a laptop screen! But the fact of the matter is that most components of a highly- functioning TV room —from wires to cable boxes, flat screens to surround speakers—don't really meld with any design style (unless your preferred look is gadget-chic, in which case we probably can't help you). Without suggesting that you purchase one of those fake artwork screens that scrolls over your TV when it's not in use, an invention as weird as it is unnecessarily complicated, we've got solutions for disguising or hiding all the electronic bits in your TV room just by following the four steps below. In the living area of a Manhattan apartment by Alfredo Paredes and Michael Neumann Architecture , an LG f...

Housing on a budget: how does a single-income or low-income family find affordable housing with rising housing prices in Alaska?

It is one of the necessities in life, finding shelter. But who actually enjoys taking the time to search all over town for a perfect place that mandatorily fits into a budget? Anchorage isn't exactly the most expensive city around, but it's certainly not the cheapest. In a search for almost anything these days, most will likely turn to everybody's favorite modern resource , the Internet. Unfortunately, the online listing for Anchorage apartments is slim, and the information available for those apartments is even more feeble. The best and probably most accurate aid in an apartment search is an Apartment Finder catalogue , the small, detailed pamphlets found all over town in stores like the local supermarket and other retailers. The Apartment Finder names a variety of complexes citywide, lists apartments within most everyone's budget, and even provides maps for easy directions. And it can be acquired for every consumer's favorite cost: p...

Around 100 Indian River residents protest for 2 hours over proposed natural gas pipeline in Chesapeake | Local News

Image
CHESAPEAKE The message from some Indian River residents on Wednesday morning was unequivocal and clear: “No pipeline in our neighborhood! No pipeline in our neighborhood!” For two hours, around 100 protesters of a proposed natural gas pipeline chanted a similar refrain, holding homemade signs that elicited honks from passing cars on Providence Road in front of the Holly Point Shopping Center . It was one of three protest locations in Indian River and South Norfolk . Susan Lambert waved a large American flag . She’s heard about pipelines elsewhere “(but) when it hits your backyard, that’s hard. That’s why we’re out here.” Dubbed the Southside Connector Distribution Project , Virginia Natural Gas wants to build a roughly 9-mile pipeline from Norfolk to Chesapeake that company officials said will fill a gap between two main supply lines . A 24-inch pipe will be installed at least 3 feet deep and cross under the Elizabeth River . Construction is set to start in Octob...

Fort Lauderdale city guide: Spend a weekend in the Venice of America

Image
Why go now? Say you’re off to Fort Lauderdale , and you’ll likely get more than one response along the lines of, “Oh, great! Um… Where is that again?” It isn’t too surprising; this beachside city smack bang in the centre of Florida’s Gold Coast is somewhat overshadowed by its loud, brash next-door neighbour, Miami. If it’s previously gone under the radar though, Fort Lauderdale is about to get a significant boost; British Airways has a new direct route from London Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale that launched in July. FL’s laid-back charm, year-round sun and competitive prices just got more accessible. Get your bearings Forty minutes’ drive north of Miami, Fort Lauderdale is the more demure, less expensive big sister to the blow-out party town. The city sprawls up the coast, with gold sandy beaches and the warm waters of the Atlantic separated from inland FL by a network of intracoastal canals – not for nothing is this city known as the Venice of America. The main strip is Las Olas Bo...

The Latest: White nationalist says he will turn himself in

The Latest on efforts to remove Confederate monuments and the nationwide fallout from a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia (all times local): 9:45 p.m. A white nationalist wanted for crimes police say were committed on the campus of the University of Virginia a day before a deadly rally says he will turn himself in to authorities. University of Virginia police say Christopher Cantwell of Keene, New Hampshire, is wanted on three felony charges: two counts of the illegal use of tear gas or other gases and one count of malicious bodily injury with a "caustic substance," explosive or fire. Contacted by The Associated Press, Cantwell acknowledged he had pepper-sprayed a counter demonstrator during a protest but insisted he was defending himself, saying he did it "because my only other option was knocking out his teeth." Cantwell also said Tuesday evening that he had been trying for days to find out about whether he had outstanding warrants. Now th...
