ICYMI: 20 Pounds Of Opioids Seized From Central Park West Apartment, Feds Say

UPPER WEST SIDE , NY — About 20 pounds of heroin and fentanyl were seized after federal, state and city law enforcement agencies raided an Central Park West apartment doubling as a drug mill, the New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor announced Monday . Four men are facing charges for operating a heroin and fentanyl packaging operation out of the apartment following the sting led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration ’s, NYPD, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the New York State Police . On Friday law enforcement officers were conducting surveillance on 448 Central Park west — located across from Central Park near West 105th Street — when they observed a man exit the building carrying two boxes and enter an Uber car, officials told Patch . Proposal would curb short-term rentals in San Diego

Short-term rentals of private residences would be sharply curbed under a proposed ordinance drafted by San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry , whose district includes the La Jolla area. Her proposal, released Monday, arrives a few months before the full council is expected to take up yet again the contentious question of how to regulate vacation rentals , which have mushroomed in popularity with the growth of the online home-sharing platform, Airbnb. The city planning department already is at work drafting alternative measures based on three options it released earlier this year, which at the time ranged from the most permissive to one that would effectively ban such rentals. The city is hoping to hear the matter Oct. 23, said Planning Director Jeff Murphy . It will mark the sixth hearing at City Hall in two years to consider the issue of short-term rentals. Under Bry’s suggested regulations, homeowners would be allowed to rent out only their primary residences on a short-term bas...

Lafayette's Circle Motel could be razed in redevelopment bid

A saga spanning the last year and a half over whether Lafayette's Circle Motel — a collection of ramshackle buildings with an even grainier past — should remain preserved as a part of the city's history was decided earlier this week, and it looks like the venerable motel will be allowed to redevelop. The news came to the delight of the owner, Mike Macinko, whose disdain for the dilapidated buildings has led to the spectacle of an owner actively, and publicly, campaigning to demolish his own property. The City Council tabled the discussion in December after being unable to find whether or not the structures on the property were of " overwhelming historical significance to the community," as required under the city's Historical Preservation Board . Plans for how the property could be redeveloped are still up in the air, Macinko says. Any development plans will have to sift through the city's planning process. Plans for high- density urban apartments were disc...

Hignell would transform the property between Pine and Market streets into 24 one-bedroom and 20 studio apartment units that would average between 400 and 500 square feet of floor space. Share This Story Property Deals Prompt Questions About AZ Firm Rodney Ernhart of Bigfork, Montana has had enough. “We’re done. We just want to wash our hands of the whole situation and just walk away. Take our licks. Learn from our mistakes and go on.” As mistakes go, Ernhart’s was an expensive one, costing him roughly $60,000. “It’s my own stupid fault.” In the spring of 2016 at a real estate conference in Las Vegas, Ernhart and his wife were approached about an opportunity in Niagara Falls, New York. The pitch came from a representative of Return On Rentals. The Arizona-based company says on its website that it “( helps) its clients create long -term wealth, using turnkey, residential rental property as the vehicle. We provide rehabbed, rented, professionally managed, cash flowing real estate for investors. ” Available for sale was a four- unit apartment building in Niagara Falls. San Mateo County bans smoking inside apartments, condos and townhomes

Smoking either tobacco or electronic cigarettes will be prohibited inside apartments , condominiums and townhomes in unincorporated areas of San Mateo County under a ban approved 4-1 Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors. Supervisors Carole Groom and Adrienne Tissier pushed the ordinance, which outlaws smoking inside and around multiple-unit buildings with one or more shared ceilings, floors, walls or ventilation systems. The ordinance also applies to any such buildings owned or leased by the county, regardless of where they are located. Second-hand smoke that wafts between rooms poses a danger to other occupants in the same building, according to county health officials . “We have a responsibility as a county to protect the health of our residents,” Tissier said. Supervisor Don Horsley cast the dissenting vote, echoing the objection expressed by the San Mateo County Association of Realtors that condominiums shouldn’t fall under the ordinance because they are individually owned, n...

Eight ways we can reduce crime in Redding

Image
Letters to the editor (Photo: Record Searchlight) We moved to Redding to get away from crime in Milpitas. As a result of my fear of rising crime in Redding, I'm a block captain at an apartment neighborhood watch . I signed recall petition, worked a recall table and spoke three minutes at the public forum in the City Council meeting in June. My very favorite solutions from Take Back Redding members shared at the public forum are: 1. Utilize existing technology (apps) to track illegal encampments . 2. Bike registration as a deterrent to the bike theft epidemic . 3. Lease city property to private groups to speed up removal of illegal trespassers and encampments on private property. 4. Increase youth on-the- job training programs .  5. Create a youth Junior City Council . 6. Parcel tax to fund public safety and jail space.  7. Target enforcement of repeat offenders on the street. 8. Split Stillwater Business parcels into smaller lots to increase sales and income to the general f...

Police find fentanyl worth millions in New York's Upper West Side

NEW YORK -- Federal agents say they seized 20 pounds of fentanyl and heroin in an Aug. 4 raid of an apartment building in New York City's Upper West Side neighborhood , across the street from Central Park, reports CBS New York. The drugs are valued at more than $3 million, according to investigators.   Drug Enforcement Administration Special -Agent-in- Charge James Hunt said that much fentanyl could prove deadly to a large population if handled improperly. "Twenty pounds of fentanyl in its purest form is potent enough to kill half the population of New York City," Hunt said. "So it's not good to have in a residential building, obviously. You know, if somebody spills it coming out of the building, it could pose a danger to the public." Hunt said breathing in or ingesting fentanyl through pores can be fatal. He also noted that the location of the bust, in New York City's relatively low crime Upper West Side , is not necessarily a surprise. "They of...
