LAKE Macquarie is being transformed at a rate not seen for generations, with a construction frenzy spilling over from Newcastle and pushing Warners Bay and Charlestown skywards. The Lake Macquarie council area, which includes a swath of greater Newcastle suburbs and townships such as Morisset, Cooranbong and Swansea, had about 2,700 development applications worth $607 million approved in the last financial year . That is 550 more than the previous year, and an increase of 23.5 per cent. That revelation, plus the fact the street could be closed for up to 12 weeks during stadium construction and renovation of the Prince Charles Hotel , were part of a baseball update and web portal unveiling at the Greater Fayetteville Chamber . City leaders discussed details on the impact of construction downtown and introduced three committees connected to the stadium project. More than 50 people jammed the chamber’s conference room on Maxwell Street. Park Square Enterprises  will announce a national fitness center anchor tenant this week that has been the catalyst for a complete re-envisioning of its plans for Park Square Plaza near UCF. When Park Square Homes CEO Suresh Gupta purchased the 12.5-acre site on the 12000 block East Colonial Dr . in 2016, he planned to develop retail  along the highway frontage and pursue rezoning for multifamily use. The German grocer Lidl opened its tenth North Carolina store Thursday in Thomasville, about 70 miles northeast of Charlotte. With several other locations under construction nearby, readers keep asking: When will Lidl finally open in Charlotte? The grocer, which boasts low prices similar to Aldi’s, is wrapping up construction on stores in Rock Hill, Indian Land and Gastonia – all locations that should open within a few months. Lancaster- based Oak Tree Development Group said it has agreed to buy the 11-acre property from Wilbur’s owner, Cargill, for an undisclosed price. “We like projects that are community-centric,” said Oak Tree President Mike O’Brien. “We’re excited to do a project that positively impacts a small town like this.” Oak Tree expects to submit plans to the borough in 60 days. The firm hopes to get them approved by year-end, start construction in early 2018 and complete the venture by March 2019. A name for the project has yet to be selected, said O’Brien. He declined to disclose the project’s cost. “We’re eager to work with Oak Tree,” said Karen Weibel, president of Lititz’s Borough Council . “It’s a local firm. They have a lot of credibility.
