JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Plans are taking shape in Jackson to bring more than 100 new apartments to the downtown area. The downtown Jackson skyline is undergoing a big transformation. Four apartment building projects are in the works, one of which is already under construction. It’s the downtown development that Jackson has been waiting for. “One of the big things we’re trying to accomplish is getting more apartments downtown ,” said City of Jackson Public Information Officer Will Forgrave. The Lofts on Louis development, which is located on Louis Glick Highway , is currently being constructed. When it’s finished, the building will have 30 apartments on the upper floors and businesses on the first floor. Different developers also want to place another apartment building on Jackson Street next to the lofts. It’s still in the planning stages. On Francis Street, an apartment building for senior citizens is planned. It will contain 45 units and retail space. The biggest project rehabs...

TRAVEL New Rules for Visiting Cuba: The Perfect Havana EXPAT Tour

Image
Touring Havana with Legendary Cuban- American Dual Citizen , Attorney Manny Ramos Let’s just say if I had known Manny was a distant cousin of Fidel and Raul’s I might have made it to his daughter Suzie’s wedding in Havana two years ago at the base of the Spanish fort overlooking the Old City. Manny hired 30 vintage American cars and the 102 guests, who had flown in from Belfast and Hong Kong, Paris and New York, San Diego and Charleston, were all chauffered to the La Divina Pastora restaurant for the festivities. Most of Manny’s ex-wives even showed up. He’s had four and is on to his fifth. They still all speak to him, which shows how good a negotiator he may be. Manny Ramos, a founder of the San Diego office of Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard and Smith, is the only person I know to hold duel US-Cuban citizenship. At age 8, he was on the last flight out of Havana after the Revolution. His father was the City Treasurer for the Batista dictatorship, his father’s job, to collect the taxes ...

A Serene Penthouse in one of Santa Barbara’s Tallest Buildings

Location: Santa Barbara , California Price: $5.25 million This penthouse is perched atop the historic 1923 Granada Theatre building , one of the tallest in Santa Barbara , a city on the California coast. Overlooking downtown, the Pacific Ocean, the harbor, the Channel Islands, and the surrounding Santa Ynez Mountains , this apartment offers “amazing, panoramic views,” said Cristal Clarke, the listing agent with Sotheby’s International Realty Montecito .   A combination of urban living, unparalleled views, and the size of the property (over 3,000 square feet) makes this a one-of-a-kind home. While the rest of the building is zoned for commercial use, the top two floors are occupied by two penthouse apartments. “There is just nothing like this in Santa Barbara .  Most condominiums downtown are much smaller in square footage,” Ms. Clarke said. “The current owner bought the property as a shell,” Ms. Clarke said, and as she completed the apartment, “she did everything with impeccable tas...

ICYMI: Al Capone’s Park Slope Home Is For Sale

Image
PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — If you've ever wanted to live in the old Brooklyn home of a notorious gangster, you've got a chance to do it. The Park Slope home where Al Capone used to live is up for sale, and it will only cost you a cool $2.5 million to move in. Capone grew up in a nearby building on Garfield Place, according to realtor.com, and moved into this listing in the early 1900s. "If he had lived here today, he wouldn’t have to go into the rum-running business," listing agent Bren Salamon told Patch . That's because Capone could make some serious dough from the two rental units attached to the condo, which could bring in a pretty penny in 2017 Park Slope . Anyone who moves in, though, won't be looking at any old relics of Brooklyn gone by. The home, as many are in the borough these days, was completely renovated by an investor about a year ago. The main townhouse is 2, 980 square feet spread over two levels. Along with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, t...

August Wilson’s Pittsburgh - The New York Times

Image
Eventually the Civic Arena, which many came to see as a harbinger of the community’s destruction, was torn down and replaced with the modern PPG Paints Arena . Half a block away, the Freedom Corner was dedicated in 2001, commemorating the civil rights leaders of the 1950s and 1960s who sought to maintain the Hill District. It is also a symbolic gateway to the neighborhood. In 2006, a proposal to build a casino in the lower Hill District was overwhelmingly rejected by residents. To this day, the sphere of influence from downtown generally stops at Crawford Street, which for me was a jarring reminder of how ghosts from the past don’t easily dissipate. Though much of Wilson’s Pittsburgh is gone, you could use his words to tour the district. I did so, led by Kimberly C. Ellis, a digital consultant and founder of the preservation- minded Historic Hill Institute , who is also the playwright’s niece. “The neighborhood has changed a lot,” she said, adding that “there is a renewed level of p...
