11 derelict or empty sites in the North East - and what is happening to them

Image
Some of these sites have been lying empty for years or have become eyesores. It’s never good to see a building or piece of land being unused, especially well-known landmarks and once-loved attractions. But these places may not stay like that for long as plans have been made to redevelop them. Here we have put together a list of some of Tyneside’s derelict sites or vacant buildings and see what’s being done to bring them back to life. 1. Property Development Group to Restore Classic, Historic Cripple Creek Buildings

Image
~ by Rick Langenberg ~ Three, old classic buildings in Cripple Creek, which have incurred more than their share of “nine lives,” could once again get revived. The buildings, located directly across the street from the Imperial hotel on Carr Street, once served as a living headquarters for actors and performers of the classic melodrama, when it was hosted by the Mackin family at the Imperial. The structures, known for highlighting the district’s Victorian era grandeur , also have a colorful history in both the town’s pre and post-gambling period. They were the source of a huge controversy in the early years of gaming, capping an era of wild historic preservation fights that once prompted an investigation by the National Park Service . This occurred when hotel expansion plans , proposed by former owners of the Imperial casino, called for the historic gems to get demolished.    This plan was rejected, following an outcry by residents and state preservation officials , who arrived in Crip...

New apartment complexes coming to Lombard area

Developers could break ground on at least three multifamily housing complexes this year in and around Lombard, village officials say. Bill Heniff, director of community development, said numerous apartment ideas have been brought to the village in recent months -- including the possibility of a 120-unit building being constructed on the site of the old DuPage Theatre -- but only three have completed, or are close to completing, the entitlement process. If those three projects are built, Lombard will be home to 547 new rental units and 100 new townhouse units. A market analysis of the village recently completed by Tracy Cross & Associates shows significant demand for more apartments in the Lombard area. Some factors driving that demand include an increasing number of young professionals who relocate to the area for a year or two at the start of their career. They need somewhere to live that is close to work but don't necessarily wa...
