A+ dorm decor: Designers offer tips for a hip college home | Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment

When Young Huh left for college in the 1980s, she brought “one giant poster of The Cure, bedding from the local bed-and-bath store and maybe some desk accessories.” Like so many Gen-Xers, her one creative touch was asking a supermarket for leftover milk crates to use as bookshelves. Now an interior designer , she has helped her own children decorate their dorm rooms, and she’s amazed at the design expectations among college students . “It’s a level of decorating that did not even exist in my world view when I was in school,” Huh said. Today, there are lots of products “that cater entirely to the college crowd,” she said. Interior designer Jon Call sees the same phenomenon: While his main business is designing luxury homes in Manhattan, he also gets asked to design college living spaces . “This new generation has grown up under the influence of home magazines, HGTV and the virtues of ‘ democratic design .’ They understand the value of creating unique spaces for themselves,” he sai...

Brownstone Triplex With Dream Kitchen, Art Studio in Clinton Hill Asks $8,450 a Month

Image
This brownstone triplex at 304 Lafayette Avenue in Clinton Hill is the perfect rental for an avid cook with deep pockets. The circa 1873 Italianate brownstone last sold in 2009 and clearly underwent a significant renovation with culinary creation in mind. The rear of the parlor floor has been transformed into a fantasy kitchen. The owner installed not one but two Miele ovens and, perhaps for the luxury of never having to put away a dish, added two Bosch dishwashers. The ovens are complimented by a six- burner Wolf range . The kitchen also features a built-in deep fryer and steamer, two sinks (one on the counter and one on the island), and a garbage disposal. A sliding library ladder gives access to upper cabinets. All the waste generated from cooking six-course meals will be easily crushed by the home’s built-in trash compactor. Even the landscaped garden, accessed via a deck off the kitchen and shared with other tenants, is equipped with the Rolls Royce of grills — a Big Green Egg. ...

New Streeterville residential high-rise boasts over an acre of amenity spaces

Of all the gleaming high- rise residences anchoring the Streeterville neighborhood, perhaps the new Optima Signature is one of the most artistic. You can't help but notice the striking red glass panels that wrap the lower seven floors of the modern apartment tower or the bright yellow free -form sculpture that stands in the plaza in front of the building. The color bursts are a signature of renowned architect and developer David Hovey of Glencoe. The 57- story Optima Signature at 220 E. Illinois St. is a joint venture between Hovey's firm, Optima Inc., and DeBartolo Development. The two also partnered in 2013 on the sister building next door, Optima Chicago Center . The base of that apartment tower is similarly clad in black glass. "Our focus is on architecture and contributing to the built environment but doing it in a way that resonates with the broader community and our residents," Optima Senior Vice President Mark Segal said. New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
