The increasingly confident broads of 'Broad City' take on the Trump era in Season 4

Image
On a rainy summer afternoon , Ilana Glazer is huddled under the awning of a Brooklyn cafe. Clad in a black raincoat, jeans and a pair of clogs, she’d suggested meeting here to talk about the new season of her show, “Broad City,” but it turns out it’s closed. Glazer’s backup plan, a coffee shop around the corner, is quickly deemed too loud. Finally, she settles on a mostly empty bar down the block. After some fussing with her iPhone, Glazer summons her creative partner, Abbi Jacobson, via FaceTime from Los Angeles. Parked in front of her laptop in an anonymous Airbnb rental , Jacobson looks cozy in a white sweatshirt. Glazer orders some fries — they’re “insane,” she promises — a plate of $1 oysters and a side of pickles and has just begun talking about Season 4 when something catches Jacobson’s eye. “Sorry -- time out,” says a suddenly animated Jacobson , 33. “ Great ear story .” “Oh my goodness, thank you,” replies Glazer, 30, cocking her head to display the “story” in question: three ...

Top 10 Rippers Worse Than Jack

Image
Crime Todd H Martin August 17, 2017 All of you know who Jack the Ripper is. Some of you know that the name comes from a letter to the police signed “Jack the Ripper” by the purported killer. But why “ripper”? A ripper is “a tool that is used to tear or break something,” and the victims were actually torn open. After Jack’s killings, however, “ripper” came to mean “a murderer who mutilates victims’ bodies.” You can thank the media for that. It makes for a great headline because of the fear the word “ripper” conjures in the public’s mind. If the victims are prostitutes, so much the better. Over the last 100 years, the press has invoked “ripper” numerous times. But many of these rippers killed more than Jack did—some a lot more. Here is a list of serial killers more deadly than Jack with his five confirmed murders. 10 Ypsilanti RipperSeven Victims Before Ted Bundy slaughtere...

Want to Avoid Other Tourists When You Travel? Here's Where to Go

Image
Travelers have clocked 369 million international trips so far this year, an incredible sum equal to nearly 1. 6 million trips per day. Year to date, it’s 21 million more passport stamps than were achieved in early 2016. And s ome of the most popular destinations simply can’t handle the volume. Look no further than Venice. As the floating city deals with the threat of rising tides, it’s also being flooded by cruise ships and mass tourism, turning a romantic paradise into a mashup between Disney World and Times Square. Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik are also feeling the crunch. This year they have all taken steps to curb tourism, seeing it as a burden on locals rather than a bastion of economic opportunity. “A large part of these overcrowding issues is directly correlated to cruising,” said Melissa Biggs Bradley , founder and chief executive of the travel membership club Indagare . “In Dubrovnik, when there are two cruise ships in port and you have 3,000 extra people in the old...
