Whispering Pines senior housing application withdrawn

Image
ROTTERDAM -- Plans to build a multi- faceted senior citizen community off Helderberg Avenue have been withdrawn by the developer in the face of opposition from residents and some Town Board members . Developer Lou Lecce pulled the application for the Whispering Pines senior complex at the end of a two- hour Town Board public hearing on the project Wednesday night . It was the second hearing in three weeks at which many Helderbeg Avenue neighbors spoke against the concept. "It's off the table. We're done," Lecce told the Town Board, after a series of verbal exchanges between Town Board members and the audience. Lecce said the project he proposed was a good one, but he didn't believe any new analyses he could present about traffic impacts or other issues would overcome the opposition of the crowd. "You were never going to convince this crowd of anything except what they wanted to believe," Lecce said. The developer said he still plans to buy the 96-...

It's years away, but 70-story downtown tower could change L.A. skyline and 'relationship with vertical living'

A skyscraper that would be the tallest residential building in California has been proposed for downtown Los Angeles as the neighborhood’s housing boom rolls on. Crescent Heights , a Miami- based developer , submitted a proposal to the city Planning Department this week to build a 70- story apartment building that would stand out in size and design amid the rapidly growing South Park district east of Staples Center. The 810-foot building with 794 units would be the third-tallest in Los Angeles behind the recently opened Wilshire Grand hotel and office tower and the U.S. Bank Tower office building completed in 1989. Last year, Crescent Heights completed Ten Thousand , a 40- story luxury apartment complex on Santa Monica Boulevard on the edge of Century City. It also plans to build two residential high-rises next to the famed Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard. Its latest high-rise plan, for 1045 S. Olive St., calls for eye-catching cutouts two-thirds of the way up the bu...

A Ryan executive attended a neighborhood meeting Monday night to get feedback from neighbors before polishing up their ideas. "We're going to really pay attention to the context and really listen to the stakeholders," said Tony Barranco, vice president of real estate development for Ryan. He said he expects there will be more than one new building on the block and a mix of residential, commercial and retail uses. The final shape, massing and composition of the buildings will b...

Editorial: The human cost of housing scarcity

Palo Alto Jane Huang, 29 Huang moved to Palo Alto with her parents at the age of four. She attended local high schools and Stanford University. Yet despite her hard work, the Palo Alto housing market is too challenging for her to foresee a future in her hometown. “I went to Stanford, I work as a software developer, I make a six-figure income, and I still have to live with three roommates,” Huang said. “What more can I do?” Huang isn’t worried about not being able to pay her rent, but she is worried about doing anything that might upset her landlord. “Landlords have a lot more power here than they used to,” she said. “They know how impossible it would be for their renters to find anything else locally.” While her concerns for herself are real and serious — “With the current housing market , I’m afraid I’ll have to live with roommates for the rest of my life” — she’s equally concerned about what the housing market means for the many Palo Altans who weren’t fortunate enough t...

With billions of dollars in investment and dozens of new apartment, condo, office and cultural buildings in the pipeline, the city's skyline and surrounding communities are poised to look a whole lot different than what it does today. But dreaming up the future of Tampa doesn't come without its challenges. For all the promises of a new urban core filled with hotels, parks, food halls and stores, there are also potential pitfalls. The Tampa Bay Times identified the five key obstacles that stand in the way of some of the biggest projects proposed in Hillsborough County . Many of these challenges are ones local politicians and business leaders have been fighting for years to find a solution. Others are fairly new territory, but still pose a real threat to the region's continued growth.
