(Photo: Russell Studio) Plans to convert the shuttered Americana Lodge in downtown Redding to apartments come before the city Wednesday afternoon . The project has been hailed as a catalyst for the area since The Hignell Companies of Chico announced it was purchasing the former motel late last year. Hignell would transform the property between Pine and Market streets into 24 one-bedroom and 20 studio apartment units that would average between 400 and 500 square feet of floor space. The realty group beat out more than 20 offers to secure the 294-unit complex on Hickory Creek Drive . A local buyer has picked up nearly 300 apartments in Henrico, where two other decades-old rental communities are under contract. McCann Realty Partners beat out nearly two dozen local and out-of-town offers on Hickory Creek, a 294-unit, 32-year-old complex of one- and two-bedroom apartments at 2344 Hickory Creek Drive . The Henrico-based firm, based less than a mile away, purchased the 20-acre property along Tuckernuck Drive, between West Broad Street and Mayland Drive, for $28.55 million. The sale closed June 27 , according to county records. McCann president Matt Akin and vice president Thomas Upson said the property’s proximity to their office, as well as to Innsbrook, was appealing to the firm, whose portfolio of rental properties is primarily out-of-state. Akin said Hickory Creek is “close by; it’s in a neighborhood we obviously know. It’s a mid-‘80s product that needs a lar...

Orange County church finds higher purpose for unused land: affordable housing and community services

At the ribbon cutting this month for the Wesley Village affordable housing complex in Garden Grove, Laura Archuleta couldn ’t resist referencing Joni Mitchell ’s 1970 environmental protest “Big Yellow Taxi.” Built on underused land that’s part of the Garden Grove United Methodist Church campus on Main Street, Wesley Village offered Archuleta , president of the nonprofit community organization Jamboree Housing Corp ., a chance to riff on one of Mitchell’s most famous lyrics. Where Mitchell sang “They paved paradise/And put up a parking lot,” Archuleta told about 300 people packed into the steamy church sanctuary on a hot afternoon that “Today we are going to learn how a group of dedicated organizations and individuals re-purposed a parking lot and put up a paradise.” Then she and others who spoke, including a single mom with six children who now reside at Wesley Village , told how the project became reality through a unique collaboration that involved the church, Jamboree and other...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
