Hay Street could be closed up to 12 weeks - News - The Fayetteville Observer

Monica Vendituoli Staff writer @mvendituoli Hay Street may be permanently reduced to two lanes near the new baseball stadium , a city leader said Thursday morning. That revelation, plus the fact the street could be closed for up to 12 weeks during stadium construction and renovation of the Prince Charles Hotel , were part of a baseball update and web portal unveiling at the Greater Fayetteville Chamber . City leaders discussed details on the impact of construction downtown and introduced three committees connected to the stadium project. More than 50 people jammed the chamber’s conference room on Maxwell Street. Over the course of about 60 minutes, officials from the chamber, the city and the Houston Astros shared details on how downtown may be altered during and after construction of the $33 million stadium and surrounding private projects . The stadium is expected to be ready for Opening Day in April 2019; the city and the Astros have a lease for the team to play there...

Five big projects in Tampa; five big problems looming

Image
The city of Tampa is on the cusp of a total makeover. With billions of dollars in investment and dozens of new apartment, condo, office and cultural buildings in the pipeline, the city's skyline and surrounding communities are poised to look a whole lot different than what it does today. But dreaming up the future of Tampa doesn't come without its challenges. For all the promises of a new urban core filled with hotels, parks, food halls and stores, there are also potential pitfalls. The Tampa Bay Times identified the five key obstacles that stand in the way of some of the biggest projects proposed in Hillsborough County . Many of these challenges are ones local politicians and business leaders have been fighting for years to find a solution. Others are fairly new territory, but still pose a real threat to the region's continued growth. Orange County church finds higher purpose for unused land: affordable housing and community services

At the ribbon cutting this month for the Wesley Village affordable housing complex in Garden Grove, Laura Archuleta couldn ’t resist referencing Joni Mitchell ’s 1970 environmental protest “Big Yellow Taxi.” Built on underused land that’s part of the Garden Grove United Methodist Church campus on Main Street, Wesley Village offered Archuleta , president of the nonprofit community organization Jamboree Housing Corp ., a chance to riff on one of Mitchell’s most famous lyrics. Where Mitchell sang “They paved paradise/And put up a parking lot,” Archuleta told about 300 people packed into the steamy church sanctuary on a hot afternoon that “Today we are going to learn how a group of dedicated organizations and individuals re-purposed a parking lot and put up a paradise.” Then she and others who spoke, including a single mom with six children who now reside at Wesley Village , told how the project became reality through a unique collaboration that involved the church, Jamboree and other...

Chuy : Plans for revamped San Marcos shopping center include 233 apartments

Aug. 24--An Austin developer has changed course on plans to revamp a San Marcos shopping center . Since taking control of Springtown Center in 2014, Endeavor Real Estate has landed a number of high-profile tenants to fill what was, at the time, a sickly strip mall that was only 10 percent occupied. Additions have included heavy hitters such as Chuy's, Gold's Gym and The Spot, an entertainment venue. While Endeavor had initially been in talks with a number of interested retailers to fill the remaining space in the shopping center , the developer has decided to go another route. Instead, it is demolishing a chunk of the center between Chuy's and the former Target store that's now home to Gold's Gym and The Spot to make way for a multi- story apartment building that will have 233 units with 32,000 square feet of ground- floor retail space . The project will be called The Lyndon after former President Lyndon B. Johnson who attended nearby Texas State University ba...

The Tate Modern and the battle for London’s soul

The iconic London landmark uses its public spaces to counterpoint the unbridled growth of London’s luxury private structures I recently found myself staring into a stranger’s living room, waiting for something beautiful to happen. I was standing on the 10th- floor viewing terrace of the Tate Modern’s new wing, a twisting ziggurat of perforated brick and mortar that rises above the museum’s home in the old Bankside Power Station . The terrace allows for 360-degree views of the building frenzy that has consumed much of London’s skyline. Cranes dip and dive in every direction; to the east, the Shard, an overwhelming ice pick of a skyscraper, dwarfs the Victorian roofs of the surrounding neighbourhood; to the west, the pregnant monolith of One Blackfriars, a 50-storey mixed-used building, looms over the Thames like an alien mothership. As is the case all over the city, many of its £4 million (Dh19 million) apartments will be scooped up as investments, only to stand empty. Idle butlers ...
