Editorial: The human cost of housing scarcity

Palo Alto Jane Huang, 29 Huang moved to Palo Alto with her parents at the age of four. She attended local high schools and Stanford University. Yet despite her hard work, the Palo Alto housing market is too challenging for her to foresee a future in her hometown. “I went to Stanford, I work as a software developer, I make a six-figure income, and I still have to live with three roommates,” Huang said. “What more can I do?” Huang isn’t worried about not being able to pay her rent, but she is worried about doing anything that might upset her landlord. “Landlords have a lot more power here than they used to,” she said. “They know how impossible it would be for their renters to find anything else locally.” While her concerns for herself are real and serious — “With the current housing market , I’m afraid I’ll have to live with roommates for the rest of my life” — she’s equally concerned about what the housing market means for the many Palo Altans who weren’t fortunate enough t...

Vicidiem can broaden your bandwidth, sans utility fee | Orem News

OREM -- The No. 1 amenity advertised at the Ventana Apartments near Utah Valley University is free high-speed Internet. That isn't because of Google Fiber, UTOPIA/Macquarie, Comcast or any other well-known Internet provider. It is because of a new company, Vicidiem, and its patent-pending product, the Layer Exempt Aggregation Device , or LEAD. Vicidiem, which means " conquer tomorrow today ," has done just that with a device that can change the way bandwidth is managed within metro-Ethernet networks.  More clearly put by Joe Brown, a local Vicidiem representative , "We provide end-to- end multimedia services . In these instances they act as an ISP. We turn up Internet and manage the network. We can also turn up video and phone services if the owner desires." In other words, individuals can decide how much high-speed bandwidth they will need at any given time, request that speed and, when they are done, the faster speed goes back to a technology pot or cloud. ...

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Some LSU students cannot start moving in just yet because their apartments are not ready. The Park Place apartments , which are privately owned and just off LSU's main campus, are still under construction.  Classes at LSU begin Monday , Aug. 21 and many students are moving in this week, but not those who will be staying at the Park Place Apartments .  "We got an email a couple of days before move in that basically said they would not be ready," said Ciera Handsborough.  "They put us in a hotel for a little bit. For me it is only a week. I know for some people it is Sept. 1. At least they gave us something and not make you scramble on your own," said Christian Christoffersen.  Christoffersen is just one of the students impacted. The apartment's corporate owner is providing housing at nearby hotels for everyone and even storage for the inconvenience. Christoffersen gets to move in this Friday, but Handsborough has to spend three weeks...
