With ‘Y is for Yesterday,’ Sue Grafton prepares for the alphabet series’ end

Lit Life “She is my alter ego,” says Sue Grafton of her fictional heroine, Southern California private detective Kinsey Millhone . “I’m an introvert, so doing half of what Kinsey is beyond my poor capabilities. But it’s fun to get to live her life without penalty!” Grafton, on the phone from her home in Montecito, California, is the best-selling author of what’s known to countless mystery fans as “the alphabet series .” The project has become Grafton’s life’s work, beginning with “A Is for Alibi” in 1982 and continuing through this month’s publication of “Y Is for Yesterday” (Putnam, $29). The final book in the 26-volume series, “Z Is for Zero,” will be out in 2019. And while the rest of us have aged several decades, Kinsey’s gotten only a few years older. Early on, Grafton said, she realized that even if she wrote a book a year, “after 26 years [Kinsey’s] going to be way too old to be running around hitting bad guys with her pocketbook. The following testimony from JD Hall regarding a recent visit to Jim Bakker’s studio and Morningside Ministries was sent to Pulpit & Pen for publishing. While on a working vacation in Branson, Missouri on August 2 – just prior to my debate on Cessationism and Charismaticism in Cleveland the following weekend – I spent time with my extended family on the campus of College of the Ozarks. While there, I planned to visit the television studios and survivalist retreat (for lack of a better word) of Jim Bakker, the disgraced televangelist who had a multi-millionaire fund his ministry come back and who is now hustling survival supplies in the name of Jesus. Prior to leaving on vacation, I planned this visit to Morningside and received permission for what I had expected would happen from my local church leadership , lest anyone think I am a completely crazy man who had gone rogue or something like that. My leadership gave me the okay to do what I, indeed, ended up doing. First, a few th...

20 Things to Do Before You Graduate From FSU

Image
I'm going into my senior year at Florida State University , which is terrifying and sad. The past few years have been awesome, each one better than the next, and I'm ready to make my final year the best one ever. I've done a lot of fun stuff and eaten a lot of good food, but I still have more to do. I decided to make a food/drink inspired FSU bucket list to check off before we all throw our caps in the air and peace out of Tally. (I'm not crying.) If you're an FSU student, get working on this list to make the most out of your time as a Seminole. 1. Have a picnic at Cascades Park. If you haven't been to Cascades park you should change that ASAP. It has a beautiful scenery with a man-made waterfall, an amphitheater, palm trees and more. If you're looking to get off campus (even though ours is beautiful) and away from college kids, Cascades is the place to go. My friends and I love going during the day on weekends and bringing along Taco Bell. They even have a...
