Contemporary design for Americana Lodge renovation near completion
REDDING, Calif. - Plans to renovate the Americana Lodge in downtown Redding and replace it with modern multi-family apartments are underway.
The architect and neighboring businesses hope this will help change the face of downtown. The plan is to keep the overall structure, but restore it.
Broken and boarded up windows are what's left of the Americana Lodge on Pine Street since it was shut down in January.
Redding Architect Ryan Russell is working with the Hignell Companies to take on the project.
"We plan to call it The Lofts, and really reinvent what the space currently is and create a desirable apartment complex, essentially, that will house and bring positive influence to downtown," Russell said.
It will be geared towards student housing.
Co-Owner Denise Craig of Boardmart Snow Surf & Skate is next to the Americana, and said she's noticed less loitering since the hotel was closed.
"The clientele in the last five years at least, five to ten years has really gone downhill over there. It was really bad," Craig said.
However, she's excited about the changes.
"The idea that it would be apartments for students I think is a great idea," Craig said.
She does have some concerns.
"Parking is an issue. The other question we have is for the people that are developing it..is on-site management," Craig explained.
Russell said there will be management on the property.
Co-Owner of Maxwell's Eatery Corey Tiraterra is also looking forward to the development.
"I really like that because people are trying to do something with their life rather than how it was. Nobody really cared about doing anything. So as much as we clean this place up, I think the better. More people will want to come downtown," Tiraterra said.
The city will be holding a public hearing Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. to approve a Site Development Permit Application to convert the hotel into an apartment complex.
