Two-alarm fire at apartment in Norfolk displaces 17

NORFOLK, VA. (WVEC) -- Seventeen people are without a home following a two-alarm fire at a Norfolk apartment on Friday.

Crews received a call at 11:15 a.m. at the 7100 block of Sewell Point Road. A woman inside the apartment smelled smoke, and got out safely, along with her 5-year-old grandson. 

As she got out of the building, she alert neighboring residents of the fire.

Firefighters arrived minutes later, and saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story apartment building. The severity of the fire led for a second alarm to be called for additional fire crews, but fortunately, they were able to contain the fire to a single building.

No injuries are reported.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue said the fire was brought under control at 12:30 p.m. About 45 firefighters responded to the fire.

In total, the fire affected eight apartment units, displacing 17 people total. The Red Cross has been notified for assisting the displaced residents.

The apartment unit did have smoke detectors, but no one reported hearing the smoke detectors go off at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
