'High probability' remains found inside car belong to missing ma
Police said there is a "high probability" the human remains found inside a car pulled from a pond last week are that of a Mid-Michigan man who went missing in the '80s.
The 1970s car was pulled from a pond in Buena Vista Township on Aug. 15. It was underwater for years, police said.
The body was found shortly after noon on Aug. 15 on a piece of property owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation in Buena Vista Township, according to Buena Vista Township Det. Greg Klecker.
The property is located next to a salvage yard on Hack Road.
Great Lakes Diving and Salvage were cleaning up the property when one of the divers discovered the Buick Electra 225 while doing a barrel sweep in a small pond on the property.
The company was hired by MDOT to do environmental cleanup on the property, Klecker said.
Buena Vista Township police found skeletal remains inside the vehicle, MSP Lt. Dave Kaiser said.
"This is the second time I've found a car with a body in it and usually if there's somebody in it and the doors aren't open, nobody tried to get it out. So seeing all the doors closed and all the windows sealed made it real suspicious of what might be inside," said Michael Mrozinski, lead diver.
Police said the body was badly decomposed and it appears the car was in the pond for quite some time.
"It's hard to tell, but it's been there for a long time, any number of years," Klecker said.
After a forensic pathology exam and a dental forensic exam, police said there is a "high probability" the remains are that of Julius Colwye.
Colwye was 61 when he was reported missing on Oct. 1, 1984. He was a Buena Vista Township resident, police said.
Police are treating his death as suspicious and it remains under investigation.
The cause and manner of his death is still uncertain.
