Neighbors react after shots fired at Rivercrest Apartments

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Residents of an east Albany apartment complex are scared after bullets flew into their homes.

Police said that at least four apartments were hit by bullets Tuesday night.

15 people and many children were in those homes. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Many of the shooting victims contacted WALB, saying they need help. The residents told us they have heard gunshots for several nights, but last night's was by far the worst.

A bullet went through one woman's apartment window around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"We heard gunshots. Then we laid on the floor. A few seconds after that we heard the window shatter.  And we just crawled into the kid's room," said a resident who did not want to be identified.

The bullets missed her and her two young daughters.

In the daylight, police gathered shell casings and evidence.

On Wednesday, WALB spoke with several residents, but all refused to show their faces on camera.

When asked why she doesn't want to go on camera, one resident said, "Because I'm scared. I'm fearful. I don't want them to come back. I'm scared."

Several residents said the gunshots have been frequent lately.

"Last week and this week. So they have been happening pretty often," explained another resident.

Many of the people said police investigating the shootings told them that gang initiations could be involved.

On Wednesday, gang unit and Albany Dougherty Drug Unit officers were at the apartments.

Investigators made one arrest,  Alexander Brown Jr., 20, who was wanted, and charged him with drug possession.

The drug unit commander said Albany Police are working to stop the shootings.

"Especially after something like this has happened, we are going to step up our manpower in this area. We're going to deploy our resources. Obviously it's a problem," said ADDU Commander Major Prurince Dice.

Many of the people said they want to move.

One resident, whose home was hit by bullets, said she will be spending Wednesday night at relatives, too afraid to stay in her own home.

Albany Police again asked the people in the community to put down their guns.
