Texas Tech made the "Cool School" list.

Texas Tech University participated in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) 2017 self-reporting Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) survey regarding environmental sustainability on college campuses, earning a spot on this year’s Sierra Club’s “Cool School” list.

Rankings for the list were compiled from raw data from the STARS self-reporting tool. This information was scored across 61 categories about different environmental impacts of a university like peer-to-peer sustainability, sustainability during orientation of new students and energy use by type.

Carey Hewett, campus sustainability officer and managing director for Services in the Operations Division, said participation in the STARS sustainability survey is important because it allows Texas Tech to highlight the many efforts being accomplished around campus.

“Texas Tech will continue to move forward with its sustainable efforts and gathering more information about the successes that happen around our campus,” Hewett said. “The university is looking at additional electric vehicles, hand dryers for our larger restrooms, increased student involvement/education, sustainable landscaping, more water bottle refill stations, continuing to improve our landfill diversion rate and energy savings.”

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 and has since become one of the United States’ largest grassroots environmental organizations with three million members and supporters.
