EDEN, North Carolina — UPDATED COVERAGE, August 25: Eden police investigators have charged Christopher Raymond Ellison , 34, of 621 North Street in Eden, with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after a double stabbing that occurred last week. Ellison was released from the hospital where he was receiving treatment Thursday afternoon and escorted to the Wentworth magistrate's office where he was given a $1,000,000 secured bond. But it's doubtful the sign refers to the nearly three-tenths of a mile of trees that have been cut down and shrubs that have been ripped up along St. Andrews Drive. The landscaping work has increased the visibility of the apartments. It also has raised the ire of Wilmington officials who have slapped the complex's owner with a $200 fine for each tree allegedly removed illegally . With 231 trees cut down, the fine totals $46,200. That's the largest penalty for illegal tree removal levied by the city that anyone interviewed can remember. "It certainly is a significant amount," said City Attorney Tom Pollard . The Latest: Hundreds rally at California beaches Boston Free Speech - Facebook BOSTON (AP) - Hundreds of people have rallied at Southern California beaches to condemn racism in the wake of the deadly events in Charlottesville, Virginia. Several hundred people rallied Saturday near a lifeguard tower in Laguna Beach, south of Los Angeles. Mayor Toni Iselman told the crowd that " Laguna Beach doesn 't tolerate diversity, we embrace diversity." The demonstration was held one day before the group America First! planned to hold its own demonstration against illegal immigration in the same spot. The German grocer Lidl opened its tenth North Carolina store Thursday in Thomasville, about 70 miles northeast of Charlotte. With several other locations under construction nearby, readers keep asking: When will Lidl finally open in Charlotte? The grocer, which boasts low prices similar to Aldi’s, is wrapping up construction on stores in Rock Hill, Indian Land and Gastonia – all locations that should open within a few months. When I asked Lidl again Thursday about the openings, the grocer didn’t offer any specifics. Lidl also won’t say why construction seems to have halted completely on a South Boulevard site . Records show Lidl bought the property at 3229 South Blvd. for $4.9 million in January 2016.
