The Latest: White nationalist says he will turn himself in

The Latest on efforts to remove Confederate monuments and the nationwide fallout from a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia (all times local): 9:45 p.m. A white nationalist wanted for crimes police say were committed on the campus of the University of Virginia a day before a deadly rally says he will turn himself in to authorities. University of Virginia police say Christopher Cantwell of Keene, New Hampshire, is wanted on three felony charges: two counts of the illegal use of tear gas or other gases and one count of malicious bodily injury with a "caustic substance," explosive or fire. Contacted by The Associated Press, Cantwell acknowledged he had pepper-sprayed a counter demonstrator during a protest but insisted he was defending himself, saying he did it "because my only other option was knocking out his teeth." Cantwell also said Tuesday evening that he had been trying for days to find out about whether he had outstanding warrants. Now th...

GUEST COMMENTARY: ‘Be fair’ regarding short-term rentals

Balancing the needs of the residents who live here and the tourists who come to visit requires political will and leadership. After years of discussions and failed proposals, it’s time for clarity on an issue central to San Diego’s housing and tourism markets — short- term vacation rentals . Through a March 15, 2017 memo, City Attorney Mara Elliott opined that short-term rentals are illegal under the current City zoning laws . The City is now awaiting regulatory guidance from the City Council before taking any action to enforce the City Attorney ’s memo. My proposed regulatory framework respects the rights of property owners, upholds current zoning laws and creates a workable compromise. I will present a draft ordinance for community review at a public Town Hall meeting 6 -7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the La Jolla Community Center . My proposal protects the rights of homeowners who wish to participate in home sharing by renting out a room in their home to help make ends me...

Panel endorses revised Goll Mansion apartment tower proposal

A 27- story apartment tower planned behind the Goll Mansion on Milwaukee’s East Side received the endorsement of the city’s Plan Commission Monday , despite neighbors’ continued objections. This slideshow requires JavaScript . The controversial $55 million project by Chris Houden, the Madison-based developer and the owner of the property, to move the 118-year-old mansion at 1150 N. Prospect Ave. toward the street to make room for the residential tower has been in the works for more than a year. “We are thankful for the commission’s review and the broad support we’ve received from the community,” Houden said after the meeting. “We share their perspective that the proposed development will be a great addition to the East Side neighborhood , and the city of Milwaukee.” The Plan Commission deadlocked with a 3-3 vote on the project in 2016. However, the project was praised by the panel Monday for its design and green features. After more than an hour of testimony, plan commission member...

Lafayette's Circle Motel could be razed in redevelopment bid

A saga spanning the last year and a half over whether Lafayette's Circle Motel — a collection of ramshackle buildings with an even grainier past — should remain preserved as a part of the city's history was decided earlier this week, and it looks like the venerable motel will be allowed to redevelop. The news came to the delight of the owner, Mike Macinko, whose disdain for the dilapidated buildings has led to the spectacle of an owner actively, and publicly, campaigning to demolish his own property. The City Council tabled the discussion in December after being unable to find whether or not the structures on the property were of " overwhelming historical significance to the community," as required under the city's Historical Preservation Board . Plans for how the property could be redeveloped are still up in the air, Macinko says. Any development plans will have to sift through the city's planning process. Plans for high- density urban apartments were disc...

Property Development Group to Restore Classic, Historic Cripple Creek Buildings

Image
~ by Rick Langenberg ~ Three, old classic buildings in Cripple Creek, which have incurred more than their share of “nine lives,” could once again get revived. The buildings, located directly across the street from the Imperial hotel on Carr Street, once served as a living headquarters for actors and performers of the classic melodrama, when it was hosted by the Mackin family at the Imperial. The structures, known for highlighting the district’s Victorian era grandeur , also have a colorful history in both the town’s pre and post-gambling period. They were the source of a huge controversy in the early years of gaming, capping an era of wild historic preservation fights that once prompted an investigation by the National Park Service . This occurred when hotel expansion plans , proposed by former owners of the Imperial casino, called for the historic gems to get demolished.    This plan was rejected, following an outcry by residents and state preservation officials , who arrived in Crip...

City appointee with TowneBank ties says he shouldn't have voted on a project financed by the bank | Local Government

VIRGINIA BEACH A Development Authority member who owns stock in TowneBank and serves on its regional advisory board said he should not have voted on a project that is seeking a city incentive to build a parking garage . Michael Levinson voted July 18 to approve CityView Two, a $60. 5 million development that includes apartments, offices, a hotel and parking garage off Constitution Drive and Bonney Road near Town Center. TowneBank would finance the project. In a 7-0 vote, the Development Authority supported returning $10.2 million in real estate taxes to its developer, Ripley Heatwole Co. Inc., for a privately operated parking garage that would provide public spaces . Councilman John Moss raised concerns about Levinson’s vote and his connections to TowneBank. When asked about his potential conflict, Levinson said in a statement that he didn’t realize he had a conflict of interest at the time of the vote. “I regret that my vote, on a matter that passed without o...

Reliable Sports to remain open, affordable housing development in question - News - Holland Sentinel

Reliable Sports owner Ken Vos sold to a different buyer. By Sydney.Smith@hollandsentinel.com (616) 546-4219 Reliable Sports isn ’t going anywhere. After Holland City Council approved an affordable housing development earlier this year, developer General Capital could not secure funding through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority , and Reliable Sports owner Ken Vos sold to another buyer who wants to keep the business open. Vos confirmed that the building is under contract to be sold in a sale that will be finalized at the end of September. The building located at 254 S. River Ave. was sold in July. Vos declined to share who the new owner will be, but said they "are a prominent figure in downtown Holland ." He still plans to retire, and a retirement sale is underway at the store. Since the business will remain open, that means the planned 54- unit affordable housing building Centennial Apartments will not happen — unless the new buyer decides to work with...

Eight ways we can reduce crime in Redding

Image
Letters to the editor (Photo: Record Searchlight) We moved to Redding to get away from crime in Milpitas. As a result of my fear of rising crime in Redding, I'm a block captain at an apartment neighborhood watch . I signed recall petition, worked a recall table and spoke three minutes at the public forum in the City Council meeting in June. My very favorite solutions from Take Back Redding members shared at the public forum are: 1. Utilize existing technology (apps) to track illegal encampments . 2. Bike registration as a deterrent to the bike theft epidemic . 3. Lease city property to private groups to speed up removal of illegal trespassers and encampments on private property. 4. Increase youth on-the- job training programs .  5. Create a youth Junior City Council . 6. Parcel tax to fund public safety and jail space.  7. Target enforcement of repeat offenders on the street. 8. Split Stillwater Business parcels into smaller lots to increase sales and income to the general f...

Honolulu City Council deferred bill requiring fire sprinklers in - Honolulu, Hawaii news, sports & weather

Honolulu City Council deferred a bill requiring older high -rises to install fire sprinkler systems .  After the 7-alarm fire that killed four  people inside Honolulu 's Marco Polo building -- many owners took a closer look at their building's safety features . "Some are more vulnerable than others, and that's what we've always been saying, you know, one size does not fit all," said Jane Sugimura, President of the Hawaii Association of Apartment Owners.   For some, walking through the dark halls of the 26th floor is a haunting reminder of a long held belief at Honolulu Fire Department . "Without a doubt if there were sprinklers in this apartment building, the fire would be contained in to the unit of origin," said Chief Manuel Neves , of Honolulu Fire Department .  Fire officials say sprinklers save lives , but the Hawaii Association of Apartment Owners says-- not all buildings are built the same way..  "I will tell you right now that nobody h...

'Gateway to Edina,' Morningside neighborhood braces for change

See more of the story When Lee Stotts was born in 1968, his parents took him to the cleaners. They brought their newborn straight from the hospital to Edina Cleaners , the family’s longtime business in Edina’s Morningside neighborhood, before they even took him home. “This was my playground,” Stotts, now 49, said. “This is where I spent my entire life. I’ve lived and breathed this company, this location, my entire life.” But now Stotts, in the wake of his father’s death last year and facing slower business , has decided to sell the building to a developer who wants to build a five-story mixed-use structure there. The plans are creating tension in the peaceful neighborhood, where neighbors are wary of the project’s height and density and worry it could set a precedent for more such development at 44th Street and France Avenue. Bob Kearney, who moved to Morningside 30 years ago , said he realizes that “it’s not going to be 1950s Morningside here forever.” “But everybody is also aware tha...

Missoula nonprofit to purchase 160-unit apartment complex for affordable housing | Local

A nonprofit in Missoula is set to purchase 160 units of apartments next to the Clark Fork River in Missoula in order to preserve them as affordable housing . Homeword is currently in the process of buying the Creekside Apartments on East Broadway, which are currently owned by an out-of-state company. The apartments are currently available to people earning $27,720 or less annually, which is 60 percent or less of the area median income of $46,200 per person. However, the affordable restriction was set to expire in 2026, at which point the property would most likely have been converted into market rate rentals due to its desirable location. This would have made them "prime" for rent increases that would likely have caused the majority of residents to have to seek a place to live at lower rates elsewhere in an already competitive rental market , according to Homeword executive director Andrea Davis . “We know that rentals are in high demand here and there’s a significant ne...
