Pittsburg Housing Authority expecting good review of Section 8 voucher program

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg Housing Authority is expecting another positive review as it submits annual certification of the housing choice voucher program to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Section Eight Management Assessment Program , or SEMAP, requires housing authorities to measure their performance over the year in 14 key areas, including selecting the recipients properly, determining the right rent and inspecting the properties. This year, the housing authority anticipates another “High Performer” designation after completing the requirements for each section. Of the indicators, payment standards for the voucher program shows studio apartments going for $1,435 a month, one- bedroom apartments going for $1,723 a month, and two- bedroom apartments going for $2,173 a month. The Pittsburg Housing Authority does not administer a Family Self- Sufficiency program , which provides incentives to families living in multifamily assisted housing to increase thei...

Finland: Police say stabbing suspect lied about name, age

Related Coverage MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Myrtle Beach Housing Authority is working to build affordable housing units for veterans. “There is high demand for affordable, one-bedroom apartments in the area,” said Ashley Chaky with the Myrtle Beach Housing Authority . The housing authority partnered with the local Veterans Affairs office to create a voucher program for veterans needing assistance . The new apartments, called Carver Grove , will be on Carver Street in Myrtle Beach. “We chose this area because of how close it is to resources like medical assistance and the bus station,” explains Chaky. All utilities will be included in the apartments, and they will be handicap, sight, and hearing accessible. Veterans will only put 30 percent of their income, if they have any at all, toward the rent. The voucher will cover the rest of the cost. One veteran said providing affordable housing could help some homeless veterans cope with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “If you ...

Chief: Construction kept McPherson fire from spreading | Local News

Nearly all residents of the McPherson Park senior housing complex have returned to their residences after a kitchen fire broke out in an apartment Friday night , a Gloucester Housing Authority administrator said Monday. The building’s construction played a role in firefighters being able to confine the blaze to the single unit, said  Fire Chief Eric Smith and Alice Sheridan, assistant executive director of the  housing authority , which owns and manages the six-story building at 31 Prospect St. The man whose apartment was destroyed by the kitchen fire has been relocated to another apartment within the 97-unit building, Sheridan said.  Neither she nor Smith could provide information Monday on the status of a woman who was rescued by firefighters and taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital after she fell inside her fourth- floor apartment while trying to evacuate. Smith did say her injuries were “non life-threatening.” “We’re just so grateful for the support from the fire and police de...

U.S. Lawmakers Seek Kushner Company Records on Maryland Apartments

Image
Morningside Park, a Kushner Companies- owned housing complex , in Middle River, Maryland (Philip Montgomery for The New York Times) Maryland’s two U.S. senators and four of its U.S. House representatives , all Democrats, sent a letter today to the large real- estate company owned by the family of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump ’s son-in-law and senior adviser, demanding information about the company’s management of 17 apartment complexes it owns in the state. The letter to Kushner Companies came in response to a May 23 article co-published by ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine investigating management practices at the rental complexes, most of which are in the suburbs of Baltimore, as well as an article this week in The Baltimore Sun that revealed additional details . The original story described the highly aggressive legal tactics that Kushner Companies has used to pursue tenants who owed back rent or had left their leases early — even tenants who left the complexes...

Housing on a budget: how does a single-income or low-income family find affordable housing with rising housing prices in Alaska?

It is one of the necessities in life, finding shelter. But who actually enjoys taking the time to search all over town for a perfect place that mandatorily fits into a budget? Anchorage isn't exactly the most expensive city around, but it's certainly not the cheapest. In a search for almost anything these days, most will likely turn to everybody's favorite modern resource , the Internet. Unfortunately, the online listing for Anchorage apartments is slim, and the information available for those apartments is even more feeble. The best and probably most accurate aid in an apartment search is an Apartment Finder catalogue , the small, detailed pamphlets found all over town in stores like the local supermarket and other retailers. The Apartment Finder names a variety of complexes citywide, lists apartments within most everyone's budget, and even provides maps for easy directions. And it can be acquired for every consumer's favorite cost: p...

AGOURA, CA - AMCAL Multi-Housing, one of California's leading builders of workforce and affordable housing , has just announced plans for two new, apartment developments in Los Angeles stemming from the recent funding from California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC). TCAC funding will be used by AMCAL to finance the Argyle Apartments, a 40-unit development in Hollywood, and the Terracina Apartments, a 72-unit development in South LA. Construction on both is set to begin this Fall. "Our success in receiving these awards is a result of our ability to develop adequate soft funding , which made our applications competitive and demonstrated a readiness to proceed with the development," said Percival Vaz, chief executive officer of AMCAL. "We have also been able to secure equity investors and permanent lenders enabling us to move forward, whereas with the economy still struggling other developers without strong backgrounds and investor relationships have ha...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An affordable housing project in Albuquerque’s Southeast Heights that has been in the works since 2015 officially opened Thursday . Described as a high- design urban infill site , the 89- unit Casa Feliz apartment complex is a $17. 2 million redevelopment project that received funding from four sources. The bulk came from $12.5 million in low- income housing tax credits from the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority . City support for the project, which is located in the International District, includes $2.8 million from the Affordable Housing Fund . The New Mexico Housing Trust Fund kicked in $1.5 million and $400,000 came through the Ventana Fund, a nonprofit organization administered by MFA. The development, which is located at 443 Española Street SE, consists of efficiency, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Reliable Sports to remain open, affordable housing development in question - News - Holland Sentinel

Reliable Sports owner Ken Vos sold to a different buyer. By Sydney.Smith@hollandsentinel.com (616) 546-4219 Reliable Sports isn ’t going anywhere. After Holland City Council approved an affordable housing development earlier this year, developer General Capital could not secure funding through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority , and Reliable Sports owner Ken Vos sold to another buyer who wants to keep the business open. Vos confirmed that the building is under contract to be sold in a sale that will be finalized at the end of September. The building located at 254 S. River Ave. was sold in July. Vos declined to share who the new owner will be, but said they "are a prominent figure in downtown Holland ." He still plans to retire, and a retirement sale is underway at the store. Since the business will remain open, that means the planned 54- unit affordable housing building Centennial Apartments will not happen — unless the new buyer decides to work with...

Hignell would transform the property between Pine and Market streets into 24 one-bedroom and 20 studio apartment units that would average between 400 and 500 square feet of floor space. At least four of the apartments would be set aside for very-low and low-income renters. The Redding Board of Administrative Review will consider Hignell’s site development permit application ...

Detroit's tiny homes offer big chance for struggling residents

DETROIT (CNNMoney) - This is Detroit, not Hobbiton. Just like the tiny homes of the hobbits in the "Lord of The Rings" series, the Cass Community Center Tiny Homes Project looks cute. But its small buildings house big hopes . Four years ago, Detroit became the biggest American city in history to file for bankruptcy, brought down by a snowballing financial crisis that followed huge layoffs at the city's major employers General Motors and Chrysler. Today, Detroit is in a period of economic recovery, yet many of its hardest hit residents still don't have adequate housing . The homeless population is around 2,000 and dwindling, according to city authorities. But uncertainty hangs over low-income earners, who struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living. "Purchase prices and rents are increasing faster than people's incomes," says Earl Poleski, executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority . "That's a manifestatio...

Lido Apartments, Hollywood's Hotel California, Has Sold

[Album cover via It Will Pass] The Lido Apartments building is known both for its lobby's appearance on the back cover of the Eagles' Hotel California album, and for the building's fall from glamour to neglect, a path that is typically Hollywoodian. Now, the apartment building at Yucca and Wilcox has sold to Lowe Enterprises for $9.4 million . In a press release, Lowe says it plans to "modernize all units in the building," and that it will immediately make improvements to the lobby, common areas, mechanical systems, and courtyard. In a 2004 article in Los Angeles magazine, Jesse Katz called the Lido "a property itching to gentrify," and traces the building's history from its opening in 1928 as an apartment hotel to its long slide downhill (with the rest of Hollywood). The Lido was the site of actor Victor Kilian 's 1979 murder--he's said to be the nearby Chinese Theatre's ghost . In the nineties, according to Katz's articl...

Shooting death of woman in Warren being investigated as homicide

WARREN, Ohio - A barrage of bullets outside  Fairview Gardens apartment complex on Duke Street in Warren ended with the death of a young woman Saturday night . Neighbors who live at Fairview said a large group of kids typically play outside, so a large group of children could have also been killed or injured in the gunfire. Resident Sabrina Simmons , who was asleep, dropped to the floor in fear, possibly ripping stitches and injuring herself after recent surgery to remove lung cancer . "I took my evening medicine and wanted to lay down and rest. The next thing I know, we got World War III  out here and there's a child gone now. I don't know who it was, but I said a prayer for that young lady and her family. A police officer helped me kneel down to say a prayer outside the crime-scene tape. What is taking place out here is nonsense," said Simmons. "You can't think it's alright because you can get weapons anytime you want to, so you get mad at somebody...
