Shooting death of woman in Warren being investigated as homicide

WARREN, Ohio - A barrage of bullets outside  Fairview Gardens apartment complex on Duke Street in Warren ended with the death of a young woman Saturday night . Neighbors who live at Fairview said a large group of kids typically play outside, so a large group of children could have also been killed or injured in the gunfire. Resident Sabrina Simmons , who was asleep, dropped to the floor in fear, possibly ripping stitches and injuring herself after recent surgery to remove lung cancer . "I took my evening medicine and wanted to lay down and rest. The next thing I know, we got World War III  out here and there's a child gone now. I don't know who it was, but I said a prayer for that young lady and her family. A police officer helped me kneel down to say a prayer outside the crime-scene tape. What is taking place out here is nonsense," said Simmons. "You can't think it's alright because you can get weapons anytime you want to, so you get mad at somebody...

The Colonnade's City Within A City

September 11, 2010 at 12:00 pm news By Kevin Plummer Every Saturday at noon, Historicist looks back at the events, places, and characters—good and bad—that have shaped Toronto into the city we know today. One Sunday evening in 1959, after a screening of the Toronto Film Society , architect Gerald Robinson and engineer/builder Irwin Burns chatted over coffee. The two shared a common viewpoint that the city’s urban core was in decline. The same was happening in cities across Canada as municipal governments were more interested in improving traffic and encouraging sprawl rather than revitalizing their downtown districts. The very next day, Burns heard from real estate developer Murray Webber that a lot with Bloor Street West frontage was going to become available for a hundred-year lease from Victoria University. “There,” Burns told Robinson , as he recalled in the Globe and Mail of October 18, 1963, “is the place to demonstra...

Louis Tramunti’s Wife Thought He Was Having a Heart Attack. So Why Did the Police Break His Back?

When Louis Tramunti’s wife called 911, she wanted EMTs to save her husband’s life after a heart attack. Instead, two policemen threw him to the floor and broke his back. It was just one of those things; didn’t even make the papers. Louis, an old friend of an old friend of mine, called me nearly a year later because “people need to know about this, bro,” which didn’t thrill his attorney. “I’m not typically a PR lawyer,” said Steven Falkoff when I called. “It’s a basic fact pattern and excessive-force case. I don’t know how much sexiness there is for a broader story.” To Louis—a good-natured if foul-mouthed 37-year-old Bernie-supporting son of Whitestone, a corner of Queens untouched by gentrification or even integration—it’s the only story. He’s been married for seven years to Szilvia, a lovely Hungarian immigrant whose calmness evens out his off-the-walls hyperactivity, and he’s worked for more than 15 years as a plumbing surveyor, making good union wages mapping out where the sleev...
