NORFOLK, VA. (WVEC) -- Seventeen people are without a home following a two-alarm fire at a Norfolk apartment on Friday. Crews received a call at 11:15 a.m. at the 7100 block of Sewell Point Road . A woman inside the apartment smelled smoke , and got out safely, along with her 5-year-old grandson.  As she got out of the building, she alert neighboring residents of the fire. Firefighters arrived minutes later, and saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the two- story apartment building . The severity of the fire led for a second alarm to be called for additional fire crews , but fortunately, they were able to contain the fire to a single building. No injuries are reported. Norfolk Fire-Rescue said the fire was brought under control at 12:30 p.m. About 45 firefighters responded to the fire. In total, the fire affected eight apartment units, displacing 17 people total . We stayed here for 5 nights and had a fantastic time. The apartments are spotlessly clean and beautifully laid out with modern, yet relaxing, decoration. They are located right in the centre of the quiet old town which is mostly pedestrian and no cars allowed. The bed was really comfortable and it was so nice to sit on the big balcony for breakfast. The kitchen was well equipped with a fantastic induction hob , coffee percolator, kettle, toaster and pots, pans and cutlery. There is a separate entrance and a modern lift to all floors. The bathroom was spacious and we'll appointed with a full bath which was wonderful after a day at Pompeii. The staff are all very friendly and the general manager extremely helpful (and charming). There is a bar/restaurant downstairs which serves breakfast or there are numerous other cafes and trattoria close by. Developers plan to build a community of new homes in the midst of an established neighborhood at the edge of downtown. The new houses will replace a cluster of small rental homes known as Tiny Town near the Oakwood and Mordecai neighborhoods . The rental community , called the Brookview Apartments, is under contract by residential developer Community Properties in a joint venture with builder Robuck Homes . The property was originally listed for $5.3 million. A final purchase price has not been disclosed. Jack Morisey, president of Community Properties , said the area is ripe for development, especially with the revitalization of North Person Street , which includes new restaurants, shops and bars. “We want to do something that’s really attractive, that really fits in.
