Madison West grad Marc Webb takes Manhattan | Movies

Characters in Madison West High School graduate Marc Webb ’s “The Only Living Boy in New York” complain at length that “New York has lost its soul.” They bemoan that Manhattan has lost its edge and become a playground for the super-rich, where rock clubs have been turned into spinning studios and mom-and-pop stores have become upscale boutiques. (Never mind that the characters are super-rich themselves.) But at least they still make New York movies like they used to. “Only Living Boy” is another literate, sharply observed tale of Manhattanites entangled in love, with each other and with their city. Although Allan Loeb’s screenplay contains some hard-to- swallow plot turns , a strong cast carries it past the eye rolls. Callum Turner plays Thomas Webb , a confident but aimless twentysomething who moves into an apartment on the Lower East Side to get as far away from his wealthy parents (Pierce Brosnan and Cynthia Nixon) on the Upper West Side . There he meets W.F. Ger...

Arapahoe County Foundation fund for Southview Apartment Fire Victims established LITTLETON , CO — A fund has been established through the Arapahoe County Foundation to assist victims of the Southview Place Towers Apartments fire that occurred on April 6 in the 5800 block of S. Windermere St. More than 130 senior citizens have been displaced by the fire and although all are now in housing, the crisis is far from over and many of the current housing solutions are temporary. Residents were informed this week that their leases will be terminated and they will not be able to return to their apartments due to smoke and asbestos damage. Additionally, some residents were told that they must pack and move all of their furnishings and belongings within the next 10 days, and others were told that they could never retrieve their items due to contamination. Many of these seniors have lived here for years and lack the financial resources to cope with this disaster. Arapahoe County Commissione...

Joe's Drive-In Restaurant brings slice of Americana back to life in Leicester

A drive down Main Street in Leicester becomes a trip down memory lane when you pass Joe's Drive-In Restaurant, a newly- reopened food joint that bursts with a retro 1950s vibe . Joe's is a slice of Americana, from its checkered floors and chrome detailing to its gourmet shakes and classic burgers and fries. But it's more than just that. Maria Joseph refurbished the restaurant and named it after her father, Hanna "Joe" Joseph, a lover of Americana who bought acres of land that ended up containing the restaurant and the Leicester Triple Drive -In. Joe's opened about five weeks ago. Sadly, Joe died less than two months before the restaurant reopened . "It's nice to see it come back to life, especially after my father passing. It's a nice, not intentional tribute, but it turned into a way of honoring him," Maria, 51, said Wednesday, sitting on the patio under a yellow umbrella. The restaurant was the first thing her father built on the land, Mar...

Man charged in Craigslist prostitute murder

A trail of blood allegedly led police from a woman’s bludgeoned corpse to a Long Island man ’s apartment — and now he has been charged with beating her to death with a hammer after a Craigslist sex-for-cash rendezvous. Raphael Oyague, 36, of Baldwin, pleaded not guilty to the murder Thursday after being walked out of Nassau County Police Headquarters . “The encounter was for sex,” said Capt. John Azzata, commanding officer of the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad , according to CBS New York. “There was supposed to be compensation for that sex. There was an argument that ensued, and our subject hit our victim with a hammer multiple times ,” he said. Cops say Oyague had contacted the 25-year-old woman on Craigslist and met her Tuesday night. Police did not release her name. Oyague allegedly killed her in the apartment and, at around 10 p.m., carried her body down a staircase and out of his building. He allegedly dumped her in a grassy area behind his apartment, Newsday said. Her bod...

Don't Have Enough Saved for Retirement? Consider Retiring Abroad | Markets-and-stocks

Most Americans are behind on their savings. The median amount the average American family has saved for retirement is just $5,000, according to a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute . Even among those nearing retirement age (age 56-61), the median amount saved is a mere $17,000. Also, while the cost of living in the U.S. varies depending on the area of the country, it's generally becoming more expensive to cover the basic necessities. Once you consider the costs of healthcare, long-term care, and other expenses you may incur during retirement, it may be more expensive than you think to retire comfortably. But who says you have to retire in the U.S.? With increasing healthcare costs , a shaky Social Security program , and rising home prices , it may be a good idea to pack your bags and consider moving abroad during retirement. Here are a few cities that may be a good choice for retirees looking for a more affordable lifestyle. Image source: Getty Images. 1. Kingston,...

Design a TV Room That Doesn't Look Like One Using These Tricks

Just because you enjoy are obsessed with Game of Thrones doesn't mean you want a big hunka plasma taking up the majority of your apartment's living room. Nor should you have to consume all your favorite obscure documentaries (and the, ahem, occasional Pixar flick) through a laptop screen! But the fact of the matter is that most components of a highly- functioning TV room —from wires to cable boxes, flat screens to surround speakers—don't really meld with any design style (unless your preferred look is gadget-chic, in which case we probably can't help you). Without suggesting that you purchase one of those fake artwork screens that scrolls over your TV when it's not in use, an invention as weird as it is unnecessarily complicated, we've got solutions for disguising or hiding all the electronic bits in your TV room just by following the four steps below. In the living area of a Manhattan apartment by Alfredo Paredes and Michael Neumann Architecture , an LG f...

Texas mom facing eviction stays at apartment

The Arlington mother and her children at the center of a controversial arrest July 3 are staying at their apartment, despite an eviction notice that told them to leave by Thursday, their attorney said. “She will be staying here until she is forcibly removed,” attorney Kim T. Cole said at a news conference outside the Addison Park apartments in Arlington. “She has nowhere to go. She’s not from here. There’s no reason in voluntarily making her and her five children homeless.” Cole said Latasha Nelson and her children will stay at the apartment until Addison Park management returns with a court order to move forward with the eviction. Addison Park management has not responded to requests for comment. The controversy stems from the arrests of Nelson’s teenage sons July 3 . Police had responded to the apartments, where a witness had reported that Nelson’s 14-year-old son burglarized a vehicle. The teen matched the “exact” description the witness gave officer Chad Haning , according to...

Man Finds A NEWBORN BABY Abandoned Outside Houston PROJECTS

August 12, 2017 : A disturbing video was livestreamed yesterday – showing a man finding an abandoned baby – outside of the projects in Houston. Here’s the video: And here’s how the local ABC news station is reporting on the incident: Deputies credit a man living at the apartment for finding the newborn before going to work. “I looked down. I said, ‘Oh, man, there is a baby right here,'” said Albert Peterson, who found the girl. “The baby was brand new.” The muffled cries of the child caught Peterson ’s attention. “I picked the baby up, and the baby had mucus and blood and all kinds of stuff all over her body,” Peterson said. “When I seen her, I seen ants and stuff all over. So I picked her up.” Peterson took the girl to his apartment, cleaned her and placed her in a blanket while his wife called 911. Peterson says it was not hard for detectives to find the mother. “She walked all the way around that corner bleeding,” Peterson said as he pointed. “You see her footprints on the gro...

Just Okay. - Review of Cedarwood Apartments, Falls Creek

Not a bad place to stay! Great location, average size room , average beds, small kitchen and nice bathroom (aside from leaking shower/dodgy toilet that wouldn't stop running unless you reset the float in the cistern (yuck!) As per numerous other reviews, manager needs to work on communication skills. Ruling with an iron fist / bossy attitude is not a way to impress guests. Shame, potential was great, however the "rules and regulations" were so numerous and unnecessary, it felt like being back on school camp! Beware of not being allowed to enter accommodation with any ski/board boots (fair enough), don't expect to be allowed to leave luggage before/after check in/out times, empty own bins, wake to early servicing of rooms at 8am before checkout time (vacuum) even though there is 6 hour turnaround time before next guest check in. Plan ahead to avoid paying for ATV transfer, but end up lugging bags the mountain anyway. Rooms very warm and no real way to cool it down ot...
