The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). The occasional jazzy façade tries feebly to make up for otherwise cheap construction amid a chorus of greys. At ground level, carpark roller doors alternate with mean pocket garden...

A resident of a Bristol apartment block revealed to have Grenfell Tower-style cladding has urged the building's owners to replace it. Philip Hoang, 57, who has lived in the Eclipse building at Cabot Circus for three years, had not heard from property managers about the fire safety risk before being alerted to the problem by the Bristol Post . "I feel scared," said Mr Hoang. "I can quite easily see a fire happening here, and there is no way we would survive it. "It’s such a nice building, but obviously if it’s similar material then they have to take it off and renew it - nothing else will work." New photos have been released showing one of the homes inside Cast Iron House – the 135-year-old New York building that is being overhauled by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban . Ban has designed an all-new interior for the cast-iron-clad building on the corner of 67 Franklin Street, Tribeca, which was built in 1882. Once the renovation is complete, the building will contain 11 duplex apartments and two penthouses. A show home was completed inside the building in late 2016 – although a full set of photos has only just emerged. Styled by interior designer Brad Ford, residence 6A features vintage furnishings and neutral tones that are intended to suit the double- height living spaces designed  by Ban. Custom-made cabinets, wooden floors and sculptural lighting fixtures are complemented by a selection of paintings and sculptures, while bathrooms feature heated floors and polished chrome fixtures . Now, they're selling it to be torn down. Ryan Companies and Weidner Apartment Homes will purchase the building and its city block, on Lake Street between Holmes and Humboldt avenues, from the organization of descendants of Norwegian immigrants. They plan to demolish the building and redevelop the site, though plans are still forming. A Ryan executive attended a neighborhood meeting Monday night to get feedback from neighbors before polishing up their ideas. An investigation was underway Monday after a security guard was found shot to death in Marina Del Rey , according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department. Authorities investigate a homicide in the 4200 block of Via Marina Court in Marina Del Rey on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013. NORFOLK, VA. (WVEC) -- Seventeen people are without a home following a two-alarm fire at a Norfolk apartment on Friday. Crews received a call at 11:15 a.m. at the 7100 block of Sewell Point Road . A woman inside the apartment smelled smoke , and got out safely, along with her 5-year-old grandson.  As she got out of the building, she alert neighboring residents of the fire. Firefighters arrived minutes later, and saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the two- story apartment building . The severity of the fire led for a second alarm to be called for additional fire crews , but fortunately, they were able to contain the fire to a single building. No injuries are reported. Norfolk Fire-Rescue said the fire was brought under control at 12:30 p.m. About 45 firefighters responded to the fire. In total, the fire affected eight apartment units, displacing 17 people total . Arapahoe County Foundation fund for Southview Apartment Fire Victims established LITTLETON , CO — A fund has been established through the Arapahoe County Foundation to assist victims of the Southview Place Towers Apartments fire that occurred on April 6 in the 5800 block of S. Windermere St. More than 130 senior citizens have been displaced by the fire and although all are now in housing, the crisis is far from over and many of the current housing solutions are temporary. Residents were informed this week that their leases will be terminated and they will not be able to return to their apartments due to smoke and asbestos damage. Additionally, some residents were told that they must pack and move all of their furnishings and belongings within the next 10 days, and others were told that they could never retrieve their items due to contamination.
